In the summer of 2013, two Rice undergraduates (usernames: lac
and bhalloran
) did several research projects whose work is reflected on this site. Their work was generously funded by the Humanities Research Center’s Carlson Fellowships. For more information about the instructions they were given, see “History” tab of this page.
Lucy
- Using county tax records transcribed earlier by a graduate research assistant, located names of likely refugee planters in the 1860 census and related slave schedules. Looked for all 1862 or 1864 (but non-1860) planters with 10 or more taxed slaves in Van Zandt County, Rusk County, and Freestone County
- Located project-related articles in the Marshall Texas Republican and Telegraph and Texas Register.
- Helped to find runaway slave ads from the Telegraph.
Brennan
- Looked through Texas WPA Narratives to identify interviewees who had actually experienced slavery in Texas and to create a list of those interviewees refugeed to wartime Texas.
- Created a spreadsheet noting those Texas WPA interviewees who remembered sighting troops during the War.
- Helped to find runaway slave ads from the Telegraph.
