Land Grants
I’m interested in learning more about this Texas law, passed in 1863, in which the state granted public lands to corporations involved in certain industries. I know about federal land grant policies like the Land Grant Act of 1850 and the Pacific Railway Act of 1862, but I don’t know how much work exists on state grants of state land for similar purposes of encouraging industry other than railroads.
Some quickly compiled links for further review:
- Handbook of Texas entries on Land Grants, General Land Office, and Land Grants for Internal Improvements
- Mention of the 1863 law in Clayton Jewett’s book, which I’ll need to look at
- Thomas LeDuc, “History and Appraisal of U. S. Land Policy to 1862,” Agricultural History (1962), jstor
- William S. Greever, “A Comparison of Railroad Land-Grant Policies,” Agricultural History, (1951), jstor
- Article on Texas land grants to Confederate veterans
- Example of a land grant signed by Lubbock
- Land Grants collection at Briscoe Center
Another question is which public land the 1863 Texas law is referring to.
