Richard Allen

Where did the story about his being the first to build a bridge across Buffalo Bayou originate? Earliest mention I’ve found is J. Mason Brewer.

He writes to James P. Newcomb on November 26, 1870, stating that there is not a regularly organized Union League council in the Houston district, and asking him to send authority to Allen to organize a new one.1

According to WPA Files, there is a story about his role as a registrar in the Daily Telegraph for September 22, 1871. Lots of complaints about electioneering in this file.
