The book is an edited version of the diary and letters of Martha McDowell Buford Jones, the wife of a Confederate soldier. Her farm was close to that of Zebulon Ward in Woodford County, and she mentions him several times in the diary.

There is also some discussion of enslaved people’s labor in the county and the horse racing enterprises of several interlinked farms including Ward’s, which is pictured on a map in the inside cover as being on “Big Sink Road” just north of Versailles, northwest of Jones’s farm at Edgewood.1
