p. 21: claims that Mississippi Black Codes served as the template for other states and “were copied, sometimes word for word, by legislators in South Carolina, Georgia, Florida, Alabama, Louisiana, and Texas.”

p. 46: note about how white prisoners often remained in prison walls makes me think I need to be more cautious about accepting official totals of white and black prisoners in Huntsville State Penitentiary; if these were only counts of prisoners inside “the walls,” then they will be disproportionately white.

p. 57: this is where Oshinsky calls convict leasing “a functional replacement for slavery,” the definition that mancini1996 dislikes.

pp. 57-62 notes use of prisoners in Texas “in coal mines, lumber mills, and railroad camps across the state,” and especially in the “Texas sugar industry” (p. 60).
